Towards sustainable utilization of bamboo for a restoration economy in Malaysia.

Bamboo Stewardship Malaysia

Bamboo Stewardship Malaysia (BSM) – is a framework developed by SEAD to guide collaborative efforts towards driving the sustainable utilization of bamboo for a restoration economy in Malaysia.
The BSM framework has 3 medium-term goals to be achieved by year 2024

Empower 500 Bamboo Stewards.

Restore 100 acres of degraded land using bamboo agroforestry systems.

Store 50,000 metric tons of CO2 per year.

Our Milestone

2020

Sustainable Bamboo Harvesting for Rural Empowerment

51 Sustainable Bamboo Harvesters trained and equipped amongst Orang Asli communities across multiple villages in Perak. Harvesting capacity: 900MT/month.

2021

Sustainable Bamboo Harvesting for Rural Empowerment

200 Sustainable Bamboo Harvesters trained and equipped amongst Orang Asli communities across multiple villages in Perak. Harvesting capacity: 3780MT/month.

Bamboo Seedling Production for Rural Empowerment

100 Bamboo Seedling Producers (women majority) trained and equipped amongst Orang Asli communities across multiple villages in Perak. Production capacity: 26,000 seedlings/year.

Restoration of 20ha of heavily degraded ex-mining land using bamboo-based agroforestry systems

2030 Roadmap

By 2030, we seek to double the goals initially set out for 2024 in response to the market, with the addition of enabling our communities to value-add onto the bamboo they harvest. The main strategies include:

1

Community-level in situ processing

To empower the communities to value-add onto the bamboo they harvest; allowing them to capture larger chunk of value in the chain
2

Optimisation of logistics

To reduce the cost of transportation of raw or processed bamboo from the communities to the buyers.
To introduce technology and digital solutions to optimize
Monitoring and tracking system to show movement of raw material along supply chain, will aid in calculation of environmental costs (e.g. embodied carbon)
3

Strengthening the network of bamboo stewards

To provide on-going refinement of their sustainable forestry skills.
To create a knowledge-sharing platform to keep all bamboo stewards up-to-date.
To introduce technology and digital solutions to increase management efficiency.
4

Sustainable Forestry Certification

To obtain Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification to enable a wider market reach.
5

Downstream partnerships

To attract investments into high-value downstream processing locally to secure a stable and high-value local market for bamboo.
To encourage existing local downstream processors to make the switch from less-sustainable raw materials to sustainable bamboo.
